Sierra Repertory takes you to the Prom
Nestled in California’s Gold Country, Sierra Repertory Theatre has long been a cultural beacon, drawing audiences from near and far with its exceptional productions. This season, they’re set to stage The Marvelous Wonderettes, Roger Bean’s beloved jukebox musical that first captivated audiences in 1999 at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater. The show’s journey from a small black box space to Sierra Rep’s stages is a testament to its timeless appeal—and Sierra Rep’s commitment to delivering top-tier theater to its community.
The Marvelous Wonderettes follows four high school song leaders as they perform at their 1950s prom, serenading friends and boyfriends with iconic pop hits of the era. The story unfolds through songs like “Stupid Cupid” and “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me,” blending humor and heart as the characters face life’s ups and downs. It’s a perfect fit for Sierra Rep, an organization known for its vibrant cabaret-style performances and dedication to accessible, professional theater. With two venues—the East Sonora Theatre and the Historic Fallon House Theatre in Columbia State Historic Park—Sierra Rep serves 45,000 patrons annually, many traveling over an hour to experience their shows.
What sets Sierra Rep apart is its deep community connection. Employing over 100 artists each year under an Actors’ Equity Association contract, the theater boasts a staff of 25, 1,500 season subscribers, and hundreds of volunteers who contribute to everything from set design to box office support. Beyond entertainment, Sierra Rep fosters inclusivity with student and senior discounts, group rates, and free touring productions for local schools. Their thriving education program and benefit events further solidify their role as a cultural cornerstone. For this production of The Marvelous Wonderettes, audiences can expect a nostalgic, high-energy performance that celebrates both the music of the past and the vitality of live theater today.
