A Timeless Tradition
For over 50 years, Sacramento Ballet has brought the magic of Nutcracker to our community, creating cherished memories for families and friends. This year’s production promises to be as spectacular as ever, with the Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera accompanying the ballet, adding an extra layer of festive joy to the performance.
The Story Behind the Magic
Nutcracker is more than just a ballet; it’s a timeless Christmas story that has captivated audiences for generations. The tale, originally adapted by Alexandre Dumas Père from E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story, was set to Tchaikovsky’s enchanting music and first choreographed by Marius Petipa. Premiering in 1892 in Moscow, it took nearly a century for Nutcracker to become the Christmas phenomenon we know today.
The story follows a young girl, Clara, who receives a magical nutcracker doll from her godfather on Christmas Eve. As the clock strikes midnight, Clara embarks on a fantastical journey filled with battling mice, dancing snowflakes, and the enchanting Land of Sweets, where she meets the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. It’s a tale of wonder, dreams, and the spirit of Christmas.
