Celebrate Spring at Old Sacramento’s Family-Friendly Festival
Spring is in full bloom, and there’s no better way to welcome the season than by joining the Sacramento History Museum for the Old Sacramento Spring Festival! On Sunday, April 27, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the museum grounds will come alive with a free, family-friendly event that promises fun, history, and a touch of whimsy. Held just outside the Sacramento History Museum, this festival celebrates Sacramento’s rich heritage and its title as the “Camellia Capitol.”
The Old Sacramento Spring Festival is a nod to the region’s long history of springtime revelry, stretching back to the Gold Rush era. One notable predecessor was the 1885 “Grand Festival of Flowers,” a vibrant event honoring Margaret Crocker, a philanthropist and the founder of Sacramento’s art museum. The modern festival also draws inspiration from the Camellia Festivals, which have celebrated Sacramento’s official flower for over 160 years. This year’s event weaves together these threads of tradition with a delightful lineup of activities for all ages.
Partnering with Sacramento Living History and the Sacramento Country Dance Society, the museum invites you to step back in time. A highlight of the day is the 15-foot maypole, adorned with a crown and colorful ribbons, where attendees can join in lively dances. Traditional country dances, accompanied by live music, will fill the air with energy and joy. Beyond the dancing, the festival offers a treasure trove of experiences: living history demonstrations, hands-on arts-and-crafts stations, gold panning, face painting, lawn games, and even hobby-horse races for the little ones.
Whether you’re a history buff, a dance enthusiast, or simply looking for a fun day out with the family, the Old Sacramento Spring Festival has something for everyone. Mark your calendars for April 27 and come celebrate spring in true Sacramento style!
