A Fresh Take on a Nostalgic Favorite: Greenhouse Penryn Blooms Where Brown Cow Once Stood
If you ever dined at the Brown Cow back in the day, you know the building at 3129 Penryn Road holds a special place in the hearts of many. From the 1960s until its closure in 2013, the Brown Cow was a beloved local staple, serving hearty breakfasts, strong coffee, and plenty of small-town charm. Now, a new chapter is being written in this historic space as Greenhouse Penryn brings fresh flavors, a lush atmosphere, and a touch of European elegance to the community.
A Taste of Home with a European Twist
Helmed by Peter Mazur, who also operates Greenhouse Café in Citrus Heights, Greenhouse Penryn is all about homemade, high-quality ingredients and comforting flavors. Their approach to food is simple: everything is made in-house—from fresh whipped cream to cheese for their signature cottage cheese pancakes. Mazur, originally from Georgia (next to Ukraine), brings a bit of Eastern European flair to the menu, offering an upscale brunch experience unlike anything else in the area.
His mother, Elena Mazur, handcrafts the stuffed pastas, ensuring every bite is filled with tradition and care. “It’s the kind of food I grew up with,” Peter shares, emphasizing that Greenhouse Penryn is more than just a restaurant—it’s a place where food tells a story.
A Space to Gather, Relax & Enjoy
Greenhouse Penryn has transformed the old Brown Cow building into a warm, inviting retreat. The restaurant is divided into two unique dining areas, including the Green Room, a plant-filled oasis that blends cozy charm with a fine-dining touch.
Step outside, and you’ll find a welcoming patio with bench-style seating, perfect for sipping a latte on a crisp morning. Inside, a modern fireplace and restored cedar poles add a touch of rustic elegance, creating a space where guests can linger over a delicious brunch and good conversation.
Coffee, Plants & Community
Greenhouse Penryn isn’t just about food—it’s about cultivating an experience. With fresh plants for sale, guests can grab a latte and a leafy friend to take home, blending café culture with a botanical shopping experience.
“We wanted to create a space where people can come, hang out, and enjoy good food in a welcoming environment,” Mazur says. “It’s all about being part of the community.”
