On September 14th and 15th, 2024, the charming town of Colfax will come alive with the sights and sounds of trains as it hosts the annual Colfax Railroad Days. This beloved event is a tribute to Colfax’s pivotal role in the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad, serving as the terminus for supplies, equipment, and laborers pushing through the Sierra Nevada. From 10 AM to 5 PM, downtown Colfax will be the place to immerse yourself in railroad history and modern marvels, all at this free, family-friendly event.
Visitors to Colfax Railroad Days will have the unique opportunity to explore modern Union Pacific railroad engines. Parked alongside the historic Fruit Shed on Railroad Street, these impressive machines invite attendees to climb aboard and experience the inner workings of real, operational railcars and engines. It’s a hands-on adventure that promises to thrill train enthusiasts of all ages.
The Southern Pacific Passenger Depot, built in 1908, stands as a testament to Colfax’s rich railroad heritage. This beautifully restored depot, which served passengers until 1971, now houses the Colfax History Museum and the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center. During the event, the depot will offer fascinating exhibits and stories from the past, allowing visitors to step back in time and appreciate the significant role Colfax played in American railroad history.
But the celebration doesn’t end there. On Saturday night, from 5:30 to 9:00 PM, Main Street will transform into a lively dance floor for the annual street dance. It’s a perfect way to cap off a day of historical exploration with music, dancing, and community spirit under the stars.
Colfax Railroad Days is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of heritage, community, and the enduring spirit of the railroad. Mark your calendars and bring the whole family to downtown Colfax for a weekend of discovery, fun, and unforgettable memories.
